It is a fact that Windows 7 has a Scheduled Task that makes a backup copy of the registry every 10 days to it would be possible to restore just the registry to the latest registry backup - or using third part tools perhaps you can extract just the afflicted registry hives from the backup and import them into the live registry. It is a fact that Windows Update always makes a System Restore point before installing updates so you could restore your system to a date/time prior to this incident and start over again.
